about

Our work begins by listening carefully and creating a space where clients feel safe, respected, and understood. From there, we help people examine patterns in their thoughts, relationships, and behaviors while developing practical tools for lasting change.

Our goal is not to tell clients who they are or how they should live their lives. Instead, we walk alongside them - asking thoughtful questions, offering perspective, and helping them discover solutions within themselves.

Real Life Counseling works with children, teens, couples, and adults throughout Northern Michigan.

Many families come to counseling feeling stuck or discouraged. Our mission is to help clients rediscover hope and develop practical, measurable steps toward a healthier, happier future.

our approach

Counseling at Real Life Counseling focuses on three core elements:

Curiously Listening
Understanding each client’s experience without judgment.

Compassionately Encouraging
Helping people recognize their strengths and potential.

Competently Teaching
Providing practical tools that help clients create meaningful change.

We believe that strong relationships are powerful and life-changing. Many of the most influential people in our lives are guides - teachers, mentors, coaches, and leaders who help us grow. Our goal is to serve as that kind of guide for the individuals and families we work with.

what to expect

Your first appointment begins with an intake conversation where we discuss your background, current challenges, and goals. Together, we will create a plan that helps you move forward in a way that is meaningful and realistic for your life.

Some clients come for short-term support during a difficult season, while others work with a counselor for longer periods of personal growth. Our focus is always on helping clients build insight, develop practical tools, and experience real progress.

Taking the first step toward counseling is often the hardest part. Many clients quickly discover that having someone listen and walk alongside them brings clarity, encouragement, and hope.

what happens when you call

Reaching out for counseling can feel intimidating. Many people are unsure what the process will be like or what to expect when they contact a counseling office.

Our goal is to make the process simple, welcoming, and helpful from the very first conversation.

Our practice administrator will answer the phone and listen to what you are looking for.

  • We will help match you with the counselor who best fits your needs.

  • We will explain scheduling options, insurance information, and next steps.

  • Most new clients are able to schedule their first appointment within one to two weeks.

  • You can also ask to be scheduled for a free 15-minute phone consultation with a counselor to ask them questions directly and determine collaboratively if you would be a good fit with each other.

You are always welcome to ask questions before scheduling. Our team is here to help you take the first step toward meaningful change.

frequently asked questions

What can I expect in my first session?

The first session is an opportunity to get to know each other and establish a plan. We’ll discuss what’s bringing you in, and what you’d like to see change. You don’t need to have everything figured out. You can't mess it up. We will help guide the process.

Sessions typically last 55 minutes, and are often scheduled back to back with other sessions. Many clients begin weekly and taper off the frequency as you start to see the progress we're working towards.

Do you offer in-person and virtual sessions?

We offer both in-person and virtual sessions, allowing flexibility based on your needs and schedule.

What are your fees and do you accept insurance?

Under normal circumstances, our fee is $150 per session.  We accept some insurance plans, and often clients are responsible for the full fee until their yearly deductible is met.

Privately paying clients can submit a receipt to their insurance provider and may receive full or partial reimbursement based on their provider and plan.

Additionally, Real Life Counseling accepts private pay and offers a sliding fee scale based on family size and income.

Do you offer evening or weekend appointments?

We offer some weekday evening sessions, but they tend to fill up first. We aren't currently available on weekends. Please reach out for current openings.

How long does counseling usually last?

Length of care varies based on your goals. Some clients attend short-term for just a few sessions, while others engage in longer-term support.

How quickly will I start to feel better?

Many clients experience initial relief early on. We focus on practical steps early on from the start.  Meaningful changes come from changing patterns of behavior and beliefs.  That growth typically takes time.

Can I contact you between sessions or in an emergency?

While clients often reach out between sessions for scheduling or brief questions, in an emergency or if you need immediate support, please contact 911, 988, or a local crisis service.  We want you to stay safe, and we are not equipped for 24-hour emergency service.
